Normally (and successfully) I burn DVDs using DVD Architect, combining MPEG2 and AC3 files generated by Vegas Pro. I opted to try out the burn DVD from timeline feature integrated with Vegas 10 and, while it sorta works and is very convenient, I find it creates some problematic DVDs.

The DVD created played fine on a couple of regular DVD players, Macs, and Windows Media Player, but according to my client, the DVD would not play correctly on PowerDVD, a software player installed on a lot of PCs. I tested this out myself and found the same problem, even on various versions of PowerDVD. It stuttered, froze up and generally didn’t play well, although there were sections where it played fine.

As it happens, PowerDVD has the ability to track the bandwidth playing off the DVD. What I discovered was that the DVD bandwidth was mainly in the proper 7,8,9 MB/s range, but that occasionally (coincidental with the stuttering and freezes) the bandwidth shot up as high as 22 to 36MB/s. This extra bandwidth was apparently what was causing the problem.

When you select the ‘burn DVD from timeline’ option (under TOOLS>BURN DISC>DVD), you are given a very narrow selection of parameters to choose from, unlike the standard render options which are extensive. There appears to be no option for limiting the bandwidth range at all.

Have any of you experienced this problem? I have to create DVDs which cover a variety of potential playback scenarios and being unable to playback on PowerDVD is not a good thing. Are there other parameter settings that I am missing? Again, I normally use DVDA, but it’s an extra step that is potentially eliminated if the burn from timeline feature worked.

While I don’t think it’s an issue, I’m burning the DVDs from Vegas on a DVD burner on my Vaio.
