  • Problem burning audio CDs in Vegas…?

Posted by Ted Snow on August 13, 2011 at 6:06 pm

This has kinda got me baffled. I use an Alesis HD24 multitrack in my studio for tracking but inport via a ViPower rack to my PC for mixing in Vegas. I used to use ROXIO for burning my CDs but since I built my new computer a few weeks ago with WIN 7 my older version of Roxio doesn’t work. So lately I’ve been using the burn utility in Vegas to burn the CDs. I put the wav files on the timeline using the “add as CD track” then using the “Tools” “Burn Disc” “Disc at once audio CD” which would be the normal way to make an audio CD.

I recently recorded an album of demo songs for a client and they wanted several copies ran off to pitch their songs. They returned 5 of the CDs from the first batch I ran off for them because they wouldn’t play. I put one in my CD player and the counter started clicking away…but no audio. It shows all the tracks on the CD and seems to be playing but it’s like the audio is muted. You can even advance to the next track just fine, but no audio is heard.

I just ran them off 50 more yesterday (which I have to do one at a time, I’m not set up for duplication). I thought I’d better check the CDs before I called my client. WELL….only 13 out of the 50 would play.

I’m in the studio now running off 37 more to make up the 50. But this time I’m using NERO to burn the CDs. The CDs are from the same spindle as yesterday. So far I have burned 25 and every one of them plays. At first I thought I had gotten a bad batch of CDs but that doesn’t seem to be the case…although I’m not totally sure.

Sorry for such a long post, but I wanted to be thorough in my explanation of what’s happening here.

I’ve been using VEGAS since ver. 3.0 in 2003, and am now using ver 8.0

Has anyone heard of this kind of thing happening before? I’ve never had this happen before and I’ve used Vegas to burn CDs in the past with no problems but it’s usually just one or two at a time.

I also don’t think it could be my burner since all the discs burned with NERO today plays fine…but I’m baffled by this.

Iam really stumped as to what could be the cause of your problem.
I have never had such an experience before, and i use Vegas 10 as
my sole source of burning CD’s.
Just in case, cause sometimes the simplest things often get overlooked.
Double check that nothing is muted and normalize everything, check that
all the orange colored CD regions are lined up correctly with each
    music.
    Last…When done…re-save your project as a different name….
    restart vegas and start burning.

Thanks for the quick reply Steve…but this is a random thing. This last batch of CDs were burned one right after another…and only 13 of them played. I normalize the audio files as I render the mix so I don’t normalize when burning…and nothing is muted (or it would be the same on all CDs burned).

I too am really baffled by this. So far I’ve burned about 30 CDs with NERO and every one of them plays perfect. As I said, same spindle of CDs so I don’t think it’s a bad batch of CDs.

Try lowering the burning speed to see if that helps.

You can also try using Roxio to copy one of the known good CDs and see if you get better results.

    Mike,
Although the CDs are rated at 52X I always burn CDs at 16X and burn my DVDs at 4X. I’ve always felt that it might take longer to burn at slower speeds but you have less chance for errors.

When I burned the 37 CDs with NERO I also burned them at 16X and all 37 plays perfectly. I’m really at a loss as to why only 13 out of 50 burned correctly using Vegas and 37 our of 37 burned correctly using NERO.

It just bothers me to think that my client has been giving out CDs that do not play. At least I know that the last 50 are OK because I checked each and every one of them.

I don’t mind just using NERO from now on…but I don’t like not knowing what’s going on with this…it bugs me.

    Hello Ted –

I have had this same issue since upgrading to Vegas 10. I assume it has something to do with hardware because a lot of people have no issues with burning CDs. I have three very similar computers running Vegas and they all have this problem.

I have posted on this forum and also on the Sony Vegas website and am still clueless to why this is happening.

The only trick that seems to helps, restart the program and do a ‘Save as’ right before you burn your CD.

Sorry I can’t be more help!

Same thing here. Burned our band’s 11 track demo using the disk at once method. Checked the first one, it was fine. Burned a total of 20. Checked the disks after I finished. The first 2 came out ok. The other 18 each contained 11 tracks of silence.

Now, I’m about to do it all over again, but, this time I think I’ll just copy one of the two good ones using some other program.

BTW… I used Vegas 8 for the entire audio project because I was familiar with the program from the days when I used to do a lot of video work. Never again. I had random and infuriating problems rendering large multi-tracks throughout the project, and now this.

Cockos Reaper is $60 and works great.

I’m done with Vegas for audio.

I’m having the same problem and it started with a new machine running Windows 7 with simultaneous upgrade from Vegas 9 to 10. I notice that Ted is running Vegas 8 which may eliminate my thought that it’s a Vegas 10 issue. My blank discs occur across two different burners and any speed I use. Sometimes they go silent after a couple of seconds and sometimes right at the very end. I have not determined a pattern. Using the pre-render option in the disc-at-once dialog helps sometimes but not always. I have burned thousands of reliable masters using Vegas since version 2 and would love to solve this issue.

Has anyone else experienced this problem or has a solution been found yet?
