  • Problem: AE real-time view in timeline VS final render

Posted by Kelly Wright on June 20, 2008 at 3:35 pm

I searched a bit, but haven’t really found what I’m looking for.

I came across a problem yesterday and I haven’t been able to figure it out. I found a workaround, but I was still curious to see why I was having this issue.

I would post a link to the animation if I could, but it was for work and of a confidential nature, so bear with me and this description of it. I’m currently using AE CS3.

I have an inset pulling out of a slice. The slice is on an image in the background. The inset has a picture of a cross section of where this slice is. Since the view of the cross section is at a 90 degree angle to the view in the background involving the slice, I wanted to pull the inset out of the slice as if it was a true sliver, and then rotate it around for the viewer to see. (Hope this is making sense). In order to to do this, I turned on “3D Layer” for my inset layer. Everything is fine, I set all my keys, it looks good. Then, I wanted a semi-transparent pullout shape to follow along with the inset, thus keeping the inset “attached” to the slice. (Not at all similar, but an example of an inset that is “attached” with pullout: https://devsite.piscoweb.org/outreach/pubs/reserves/images/anacapa_inset.jpg )

So I animate the points on the path of my pullout shape so that the points stay attached to the corners of the inset while it’s rotating out from the slice. Everything looks good. I’m done. I render out my wmv and I watch it. Here’s where the problem began. Upon watching the wmv, I realize that the “3D” Inset lags behind the pullout, and now my pullout points are no longer at the corners of the inset box. I go back and double check my pullout in the timeline. Sure enough, it’s perfect. I try looking for some kind of settings or preferences, play with turning OpenGl off… nothing. It still renders something different from what I’m seeing in real-time in the program.

Eventually, I had to pre-render the 3D inset animation as a .mov and then replace the layer with that in the timeline, and reanimate the pullout points. That was the only solution I could come up with.

So is this some kind of bug with AE, or is it simply a setting I’m not aware of? Thanks for any replies. 🙂

this is about the second or third post i’ve read about cs3 not rendering like it does in the preview… there was one this week with an effect (cc time blend, i think) that didn’t render in the final render, but could be seen in the preview…

the only thing i can think of (other than what you’ve tried) is to disable multiprocessing and see if that helps… you might also try a reboot and maybe move the ‘adobe after effects 8.0 prefs’ file to the desktop — you might even try moving the whole prefs folder (called ‘8.0’) to the desktop. then see if things get better.

if they don’t, i suggest posting on adobe’s after effects forum to see what they have to say…

    Hi Kevin,

Good call. I have had issues like this in the past and I have found that when I force a rebuild of the prefs file, the issues go away. In my case, I go into the prefs and change a setting or two and close it. This forces the prefs to save my new settings, causing a new prefs file to be saved.

I can’t guarantee it will work for all the issues that Kelly is having but it has saved my enlarging posterior more than a few times in the past.

    Best regards,
