I’m trying to get my head around best practices for filebased workflow in Avid & FCP. If giving a unique name to the top (level-folder) of a camera directory is supposed to be the equivalent of a unique tape name, I have this question*.

With MC5 I ran a test with a Canon directory where I acquired clips via AMA from a directory with a modified “card folder” name. When I bring it into the Avid (Link to AMA files) there is no entry in Tape or TapeID. For easy organizing, sorting and tracing, what should I be doing to generate the file version of a Tape name?

*Note- I am not working with camera cards themselves but rather that content delivered on a hard drive.

Thanks in advance for any help.

p.s. I assume the names get modified in the following way. I had started a tread about some of this in the FCP Basics Forum

    P2…

    UNIQUE CARD NAME:
    >CONTENTS
    >LASTCLIP

    XDcam…

    UNIQUE NAME DAY1-CARD2
    > 20100913225140
    > BPAV

    and Canon…

    UNIQUE NAME Card 2
    DCIM
    MISC

In your scenario, there will either be a filename the SOURCE FILE column or you can enter the directory/folder name in the Labroll or Camroll column and that can be used in EDL later if needed.

Thanks Michael. Seeking the modern (tapeless) version of Tape Name I was hoping not to have to manually Modify every clip I ingest to add a Tape Name equivalent. I say this because SOURCE FILE you suggest only restates the (in this case) the MVI_#.mov name. That’s great to have after I change the clip name to something content related but offers no trace of a directory-folder that would show what bucket* these clips came from. You know this stuff inside-out and I’m pretty green, just hoping looking something more automatic if I am diligent about giving unique names to camera card directories.

*Yes I could start out with “card name” bins but after reorganizing and migrating clips to new bins I’d like to be able to sort (kindred) clips for review.

    Best,

There is not automated way to use a directory name and populate a column with that metadata. On films I consult on, I have them name the bin the same as the directory, then I have them copy the folder name, then the following little known feature:

Highlight all the clips that pertain to that folder. As you move your curor on any of the clips under any of the columns, you will see it change to a text edit type cursor. Either in a custom column of your choice, or in Labroll or Camroll, you right click and you will see a menu entry to add this metadata to the . Select that and a little window pops up. Paste your clipboard content and click OK, It will be applied to all selected items.

That’s great Michael thanks, wasn’t looking forward to the prospect of modifying clips individually.
