    Hi there,

could anyone point me to a HDD compatibility list for this enclosure? (Proavio site doesn’t offer one…)
If there’s anyone who use this enclosure, what kind of speeds should I get with a good controller card?

    Thanks,
    Laco

    Laco,

It’s there, see this page: https://www.proavio.com/index.php/support/support-resources/downloads/summary/38-compatibility-lists/22-general-compatibility-list

From main Proavio page: http://www.proavio.com > Support > Downloads > Compatibility Lists > General Compatibility List (once you’ve got that page up, SCROLL DOWN to EditBOX) which is the EB8MS (8 bay) series as well as the EB4MS (4 bay)….

Thanks, but the EB8MS isn’t on the page. Is it the same as for the EB800MS?

    Laco,

Scroll down to “EditBOX” (which encompasses the EB8MS) the EB800MS has a 6G backplane while the EB8MS has a 3G backplane, they are different products with different drive requirements.

We suggest running the Areca 1223X with the EB8MS which will give you performance of 900MB/s read-write….

Should you need anything else, feel free to post on this forum or contact me directly, we’re here to help.

    Jon,

thanks for your help, you’re very kind!
As 4TB hard drives are much more expensive, I’ll go with the 3TB ones. Would you recommend the Toshiba DT01ACA300?

Also I bought the Proavio as a used enclosure, so the RAID controller was given with it. It is an Areca 1680X, hope to get speeds like you mentioned:)
Later, I would like to buy one of your 16bay, 4K capable enclosures…

the Areca 1680 is a 3g enclosure. You will not get the speeds you expect. You will get 600 MB/sec at best. You need a 6g controller like the new Areca 1882x to achieve these faster speeds. And if your enclosure is an older 3g enclosure, even with an 1882x, you will still only get the slower speeds.

Since you are looking to save money, and you have a used RAID enclosure, and a used Areca 1680, just get any drives – the Toshiba’s will be fine for what you are doing. You are not building a state of the art system – you have limited funds, and you are doing the best you can with the limited money that you have available.

    Thanks Bob,

I was looking to buy a 6G enclosure, with the Areca 1882x as you advised before in this forum.
But a very good opportunity came for me to buy a 3G enclosure, and a 3G card together at the fraction of the price…

As the most demanding thing for me right now is 2K DPX, 5-600MB/s is better than enough:)

But I understand that this is not a state of the art system.
    Thanks!
