I’m sure there is lots to say on this obviously, but I am sitting at that crossroad of choice. I am shooting with Panasonics DVC200 SD, 1/2″ 3ccd, firewire ENG cam.
I was weaned on Elements and am comfortable with that interface. Premier PRO is cheaper and works better with other Adobe products which I use. I want to shoot a digital film, edit and export for the purpose of broadcast. I keep hearing Avid is the industry standard, but if I edit it myself then who cares what it is edited on as long as it is a professional level editor. Am I missing something?

Question: Is there any REAL advantage to using Avid over Premier Pro for the purpose of independent filmmaking and documentary?

Also want software scopes…do either of these editors have them?

Thank you to anyone who takes a moment for input.

I know PPro has software scopes…I can’t believe that any product you would buy from Avid wouldn’t have scopes, but I’m not familiar with every product they have.

I think that if you plan to online the project, some sort of PPro workflow should be fine.

If you plan on finishing at a post facility, then you need to be concerned about transportability of edit decision information, and since many large post facilities are still Avid-based…that might affect your choice.

Reason to use Avid? Most who maintain that they work with large amounts of clips (think feature-length documentary, or simply feature), maintain that Avid’s media management is still superior to Adobe. Depending on the Avid configuration and the PPro configuration you are comparing, obviously since Avid is a one-manufacturer system on their larger systems, they have a bit of a support advantage, but there is a premium you pay up front for that.

There are a some things many of us would like to see improved in PPro in regard to media management, but Adobe seems to be listening and making progress.

Good and bad in either direction, much of it subjective based on personal opinion or the expressed opinion of others.

I would think if you are comfortable with the Adobe interface conventions and you have control over the entire post process, PPro should probably do the job for you…

I agree with pretty much everything Tim said. I would add that, in my experience, scopes are actually pretty unreliable on both applications (although they should do for very basic monitoring); but you would be much better off with an external one, even if that means going through used classified.
