I have an issue. I received a video from a client. It’s a very professional video. I want to say it’s D1 format but that’s just a guess. The problem is I can’t open it in any of my software. Windows Media Player doesn’t play it, Vegas 7 won’t open it and neither will any of the programs in the CS3 package (AE and Premiere Pro).

The only program that would open it was VirtualDub. Which said it was repairing the index file when it did. From there I was able to convert it to a different AVI format that Vegas could open. Problem is the original AVI has timecode in it I need to see. I have the feeling this timecode got stripped out when converting to a different AVI format.

How can I find out what codec the original AVI is and where do I get that codec? Will it work in Vegas if I do?
    Is something like this:

    a good idea to install?

IMO, it’s never a good idea to install a codec pack to see if something “might” work.
The better solution is to try and find out what the required codec is and install it.

With that in mind, grab a copy of GSpot and see what it says the codec is.
