May 31, 2007 at 5:53 amI am curently reviewing Final Cut Studio 2 and did some tests with the ProRes 422 codec. All I can say is that they are some visible artefacts after the 1rst generation ! I used the test pattern from Marco Solorio (www.onerivermedia.com) and after the 1rst generation you can see aliasing on the color bars/circles.
I have posted the results on my web site: http://www.xplorerstudio.com/prores422
source-pal.png is the orginal source
ProRes422-G1.png is the 1rst generation (PreRes 422)
ProRes422-G1-cf.png is the 1rst generation with 4:4:4 chroma filtering (PreRes 422)
AuroraXtreme8bit-G1.png is the 1rst generation with the Aurora Xtreme 8-bit codec for reference
So I don’t think it qualifies for “uncompressed HD quality” 🙁 I know this test pattern is tough and far from a real wolrd situation, but it’s just like crash test: you wish you’d never go into such a situation, but you glad it can handle it !
Maybe ProRes 422 is fine for editing (especially if you work with HDV footage), but I think I would not use it for motion graphics or any kind of post. I’ll do some more test to see how it handles real world situations.
