    Hello everyone,

I’m looking for some work flow advice. I’m pretty new to Avid media composer having come from an FCP background but I am looking to get more experience using Avid MC 5 and so I have recently purchased a copy. I have a short film that I am about to start editing which was shot on HD CAM and the tapes have already been digitised as Pro res 422 (HQ). Are there any problems I have to look out for whilst editing Prores in Avid and when I come to export for the grade will there be any problems to look out for then? Or is it a fairly seamless process? I am also wondering what type of DNX codec to use in order that there doesn’t need to be any conform back to HD CAM at the end of the offline ie keeping the picture quality the same/so close to HD CAM you cant tell the difference with the naked eye.

    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Michael, London, UK.

    hi Michael

on a strong machine with fast drives maybe you can get the prores files to work natively via AMA. i’ve got mixed results. but if it works for you, you can edit natively then export your sequence uncompressed for grading

as prores is 220 Mbs then your only option in PAL world would be DNX 185
although HDCAM is 8 bit, prores is 10, so you should probably go 185X

i would still think recapturing the final sequence from HDCAM to DNX at the end would yield better results than you’ll get when transcoding the prores files to DNX.

mind that you will need a Nitris (hardware) to do it

One big issue is HOW the files were captured. I have seen FCP captures with blacks at 0 rather than 16. If you transcode that into Avid, not sure what happens with the color space.

I’ve heard that the export of the final sequence from Avid from original pro res files can actually leave the colours looking very dark so I think I’m going to just go back to basics and re-digitise the tapes as DNX into Avid. So you would recommend that if I don’t want to do a conform back to HD CAM at the end for the colour grade but actually just export the highest res HD timeline from Avid that I should digitise at DNX 185? and that’s the best codec to get the same res as the original HD CAM res?

You do not need Nitris Hardware to ingest HDCam. A Mojo DX will do the job just fine.

As far as I understand it, if I connect the HD CAM deck to my MAC and import the tapes through the capture tool in Avid MC 5 that should be fine right? Do I still need the Mojo? My copy of Avid didn’t come with the dongle…

You need a break-out box with HD-SDI inputs. That would be Mojo-DX (not Mojo or Mojo SDI) or Nitris DX. Or Adrenaline-HD (with the optional HD I/O board).
