Pro Res: dropped frames on capture
For another user in this forum, Jeremy posted the following:
The reason why I said DVCPro HD for an ‘offline’ codec and not ProRes on your system is because you have a PowerPC dual 2.0 G5. If you had an intel machine, I would most definitely say use ProRes. Since ProRes is a pretty processor intense codec, capturing ProRes requires an intel machine.
Thank you for this. I lost a day trying to figure out what was wrong with my settings! (I also have a PPC dual proc G5.) Now I know I was attempting the impossible.
My followup question is this: I’ve captured in DVCPRO-HD (1080i), but many AE graphics will be added to my cut later. What workflow would you suggest? Here are the options we’re considering:
1 – AE artist gives me elements w/ alpha channel (Animation codec). I render in DVCPRO-HD.
2 – I export a Pro Res version and give it to him; all the rendering gets done in After Effects.
Is there a better option? In the past I haven’t found DVCPRO-HD to be a good post production codec.
Thanks much – and thanks for your other post reassuring me about mixing 720/30P and 720/30PN (different project).
