I have a major continuing problem with the Pro apps not releasing files when they are done with them. If I want to update a file (like a prerendered quicktime in motion, for instance) I can’t just update it– it’s locked. I can’t just delete the file in the bin or close the project, I have to actually EXIT FCP before I can rewrite the file?

Adobe apps on my PC can actively edit and save files while their open in different apps and they dynamically update… why do I have to EXIT AN APP to edit a file?

Today, I had to render to a seperate file in motion because I had navigated to a FOLDER where that file was in the “file browser”– not even clicked on the file.. I tried navigating away, and it was still open.. (verified with “Open files & ports” in Activity Monitor)

Is there something wrong with my Mac OS? I’m getting locked files if a file is “clicked” in finder (preview is up in finder) .. Is there no “open for reading” as opposed to “open for writing” in OS X? Any advice? Searching on locked files in OS X didn’t get me much of anywhere, here or google..

I should point out that it’s on a removable drive, formatted Mac OS Extended, not journaled… (So it’s not ‘repairing permissions’..) Also having the problem on SMB drives, but I’m learning that OS X is kinda lacking for SMB access..

    Anyone?

Hey Cory, can you give me an example? You mean you are trying to re-render a file with the same name and you can’t because it’s locked? Or you are trying to access a file and you can’t because it’s locked?

Sorry, It’s Monday and I haven’t quite fired up the ole brain cells to full capacity yet.

The former– I’m trying to overwrite an existing file, whether with photoshop, motion, or whatever..

FCP seems to be the worst offender– I can delete the file from the bin, and it’s still “in use” — even if I close the project. It won’t release the file until I exit FCP completely. But all the pro apps have some of the same issues. (Oddly enough sending a file to a soundtrack pro script doesn’t have this problem– I have one that converts to 48k, overwriting the same file, and that works using right click>send to>soundtrack pro script. I assume “send to” specifically closes the file, becasue they know it needs to be overwritten elsewhere.

Way OT: Speaking of which, why do all audio houses insist on delivering in 44.1 no matter what you tell them?) Dear local audio houses, when is the last time you delivered something on CD? Oh, 2001? Can you PLEASE STOP OPERATING IN 44.1?? THANKS! /OT

So, if you select a file in the Finder, and choose “Get Info” from the File menu, what do you see in the “Ownership & Permissions:” panel near the bottom? Do that, also, for the drive these files are on. My guess is that you don’t have write permissions on the whole drive. If you’re logged in as the administrator, you should be able to change the permissions on the whole drive at once, and all the files & folders inside of it.

Are you using FCP’s Make Offline function, or just deleting in the Finder?

If you don’t use Make Offline, you might get that error because versions of your project in the Autosave Vault, and in the undo cache can still point to the file (Closing the program gets around that).

When I have this problem (usually doing AE re-renders of a graphic and it tells me the file is in use), I delete it in the Finder. If I try to empty the trash, it won’t let me because the file is in use, but if it’s in the trash, I can save a new file with the same name to where it was and reconnect in Final Cut. Then, once the new file is reconnected, I can empty the trash.

I run into the same issue from time to time when I try to update QT files I’ve rendered out of Motion. DVDSP is the best with this… if you update files in a DVDSP project it says “hey, this file, like, changed and I’m going to use the new one. kthnxbye.” I don’t think it’s an error so much as it’s how FCP works with media.

Using the “Make Offline” command to delete the media and then reconnecting to the new version would work. I usually use the “Open in Editor” command, which tells FCP to allow and watch for changes to a file. When you come back to FCP, it updates automatically.

You have to set your external editors in the preferences to use this. If you’re exporting from AE you could just have the file open in AE, close it, overwrite it and go back to FCP.

    Hope that helps,
    Zak

If you want FCP to let you edit files it uses while it is running try “Open in Editor” from within FCP.

[CoryTV] “Adobe apps on my PC can actively edit and save files while their open in different apps and they dynamically update…”

PPro’s code is relatively modern. FCP’s code is very old.
