printing to video – 720p timeline to 1080i deck (sony FX-1)

Hello from portsmouth, nh. I am currently working on a HDV project in FCP 5.1 that was shot on a JVC-100U. The sequence setting is 720/30P and I am trying to print my project to tape. I have a Sony FX-1 that I am using as a deck. The FX-1 only captures at 1080i or SD.
I would like to capture my 720p timeline at 1080i. In the A/V devices control I’ve set the “different output for Edit to Tape/Print to Video” control to “HDV (1440 x 1080) 30 fps” and the audio to “HDV”. And, with the camera in VCR mode, I set the VCR HDV/DV menu setting to HDV and the i.link conversion to “off” before connecting the camera to my G5 tower.
Additionally, I know that the FCP sees the camera because I am able to print and downconvert to SD using the camera and FCP recognizes it in (in HDV mode) in the A/V Settings.
When I try to print to video a “conforming HDV video…” progress box appears, my CRT monitor goes black as it should and the normal message appears “ready for playback, click OK to start recording media onto deck.”
I then start the FX-1 recording, I wait for the TC on the LCD to start moving forward and I select OK in FCP. Everything seems cool until I try to play back from the tape after printing. The TC moves forward and all I see is blue on the LCD.What am I doing wrong?? Do I need to render all my footage in a 1080i timeline before printing? If so, what will this do to my footage?

Well, Francese… You cannot output a 720p timeline to a 1080i deck a WITHOUT some sort of cross conversion. You have a few possibilities here.
One, you could nest your 720p timeline into a 1080i timeline BUT you’ll notice right off of the bat that the video will not fill the screen, so you’ll have to blow it up to the correct size. That’s going to make it look yukky (Yes, that’s a tech term).
Two, you could send your timeline out to Compressor and have it cross-convert your program to 1080i HDV. Then import the converted file into a 1080i timeline, render, and then output as usual. BUT this is going to take quite some time depending upon the length of your program.
Thirdly, and the best option, output your program thru a capture card like the Kona3 or Blackmagic cards that can cross-convert on the fly to an HD machine that has HD-SDI inputs. This is a real problem for you since you don’t have access to this.
In your best interest, option two is your ONLY real option to output your program. But I did want you to know all of the possibilities.
