Printing to tape problem
Posted by Emma Rayner on March 17, 2010 at 8:20 pmHi, I am new to FCP. I’ve just completed my first project but when I try to print it to tape from the timeline using the File… Print to Tape dialogue box, the project plays out, camera starts recording, but only records blue screen, not the edited video that is playing out… any tips gratefully received.

March 20, 2010 at 7:38 amHi Emma, what format are you editing in and what kind of camera/tape are you outputting to? The camera/tape needs to be able to take the format you’re outputting since I assume you’re dumping out via Firewire and not a video card to a deck.

March 20, 2010 at 10:16 amHi Kai, thanks for responding… I managed to sort the problem by closing everything down and making sure I switched the camera (Sony Z1 minidv) on before I opened up FCP7, then the Print to Video worked. Hurrah! I think I had turned the camera on while FC was open before and that may be why it didn’t dub. BUT I have also noticed a problem with the sync on the audio, it seems to be a few frames out all the time. I can fix it in the edit but it’s v annoying. I’ve just moved over from Avid to FC and haven’t come across this before so any tips gratefully received. Many thanks. Emma

March 20, 2010 at 3:22 pmHi Emma,
Good to hear it worked out fine and it’s just a simple fix ;] The alternative to restarting is to turn on your camera, then in FCP, go to View > Refresh AV Devices > Video Playback [choose your Firewire connection] > External Video [All Frames]. That way, you can switch between a desktop and Firewire-out preview.
As for the audio drift… do check your sequence settings match that of the camera settings [ie. 48k/16bits, not 44.1k or 32k].

March 21, 2010 at 7:58 amHi Kai, thanks very much, I’ll do that in future. Re the audio drift, my settings match the camera settings but I’ve found a ‘Frame Offset’ box in Playback Control in System Settings in FC and it was set to a default of 4 frames so I’ve made it 0 and will see if that makes any difference. I’m being so SLOW compared to working in Avid but hopefully it’ll pay off eventually! Am self-teaching with Lynda.com.
Thanks again, Emma
