Printing DVCPRO HD to 4×3 DVCAM
Posted by Paul Lowey on August 19, 2009 at 5:40 pmI have a large project (90 minutes) that was shot and cut in DVCPRO HD (shot with the HVX-200). I need to print the project to DVCAM 4×3 (no letterbox). Can anyone offer some best practices for doing this? Solutions that require less rendering are preferable as my edit suite is a little weak.

August 19, 2009 at 6:04 pmNO letterbox…does that mean full screen 4:3 PAN AND SCAN where you chop off the sides of the image, or ANAMORPHIC output?
Do you have a capture card? If so, connecting that to a DVCAM deck and having the card do the downconvert is all real time, when you output. If not, you need to either drop the footage into a DV timeline and render, or convert in Compressor. Sorry…rendering. The only way to get footage to a DV deck via firewire is to convert it to DV.

August 19, 2009 at 9:10 pmThanks Shane. Yes, that does mean Pan & Scan. And I don’t have a capture card. I am relying on outputting via FireWire. Speaking of which, can you recommend a DVCAM deck that will accept the TimeCode from my project (rather than the deck generating it’s own)?
I’ve found with a test that moving the footage into the DV-NTSC sequence makes everything LetterBoxed. Is there a smart way of doing this where it will automatically crop the sides?

Nope…because via firewire you cannot send sequence code out to a deck. Used to work with the DSR-11 back in FCP 3 days, but now it no longer does. If you need proper show code output to a tape, you need a capture card. Sorry.

August 27, 2009 at 4:51 pmOK. I managed to figure something out last night and it appears to have worked. Here’s the steps I took – any input/criticism would be appreciated (as I need to do this again in a couple of weeks).
1. Export movie from DVCPROHD sequence (using current settings).
2. Dragged that movie into a DV-NTSC sequence and reframed it to remove the letter boxing.
3. Export movie from DV NTSC sequence using current settings.
4. Dragged that movie into SimpleVideoOut.
5. Pushed record on the DSR-45 (attached via FW. TC settings for External) and pressed play on SimpleVideoOut.
6. The deck captured everything perfectly as well as the TC that was assigned in the NTSC sequence. This took about 6 hours of outputting (4 hours from the DVCPRO sequence, and 2 hours from the NTSC sequence), and then the actual print to tape (it’s a 90 minute program) – so if anyone has any ideas for me to try and reduce this output time, please pass it my way. And THANKS!
