Print to Tape with mini DV
Hi There
I am trying to do a mini-dv copy of my film from final cut. Problem is when I go print to tape (to my sony handicam via firewire) it won’t auto-record, and I am unable to start the camera recording from VCR mode. Don’t know if this is a final cut problem or camera problem…
Any help would be appreciated.

Which sony handycam is this? Do you not have deck controls on the top or inside the viewer on the camera?
As for autostart from Print to Tape. I haven’t figured that one out yet. SOmetimes it works for me and sometimes it doesn’t. Too many variables to figure out… or, I’m just clueless too.
Check again with the camera to see if there isn’t a record button on the camera other than the big red video record button.

Does the camcorder not HAVE a record button?
If it DOES, you must hold it down along with the PLAY BUTTON (or the “extra” record safety button… usually right next to the record button).Some camcorders do not HAVE a record button in the VCR mode but DO have on the Remote Control for that model (Remotes can be purchased separately).
One more thing…
Does the TAPE have the “record lockout tab” pushed OPEN? (That won ‘t allow recording on that tape.) -
I can help you with this.
1. Connect the camcorder to your computer.
2. Slide your camcorder’s POWER switch to PLAY (vcr). And make sure your tape/card is set at TAPE.
3. Load a blank tape in your camera.
4. Press the PLAY/PAUSE) button >/II on the camcorder.
5. When you get to the point where you wish to stop recording, press the sstop button or the pause button.
NOTE: you can monitor the picture on the LCD screen/viewfinder of your camcorder if you wish.
When I read your post I thought wow, been there done that! It took me 4-5 days to figure out what I was doing wrong when I wanted to take my pre rendered video from Vegas 6 editing software back onto my camera.

i’m having the same issue as this original post-er and found this thread. i’m trying to print to tape from FCP on to my canon gl2 and can’t get anything to show up. it acts like the print is going normally, the camera says its recording and FCP goes into its full screen mode for the whole program, but when i play the tape back there’s nothing.
does your tip apply to his sony camera or to your gl2? as in, should i just try not doing the auto-start option?
