Print to tape with exact timecodes
In the old Media 100 world, I used to be able to black 30 seconds of a Beta SP tape and then just assemble the reel by assemble edit with perfect matching timecode that corresponded with my timeline.
Does that work in FCP? Or do I need to black a whole tape with time code first?
Second, what I’m trying to do is send 42 individual clips to a transcription company who will create XML code to insert into .flv files I’m providing my client. I’m trying to give the client .flv fies and the corresponding XML caption file so they can insert them into their own designed flash application. Any suggestions? Thanks very much

Yep, that’s easy with Edit to Tape and Assemble Editing.
FYI, I used Media 100 for 6 years before switching to FCP back in 2001. It takes about 2 months to make the full transition from one app to the other. About a week to get started.

You don’t have to black the whole tape if you’re doing an assemble edit.
My FCP sequence starts at 58:30 so I set the Betacam to record TC at 58:25 to allow for preroll. I’ll lay down bars for several seconds past 58:30, then “assemble edit” the program, assigning 58:30 as the in-point. The end of the program is the out-point.
FCP will begin the assemble edit at 58:30 and continue writing the proper TC on the rest of the tape, throughout the entire program.
This procedure allows me to have the program start at precisely 1:00:00;00.

I have a problem recording to my VTR – Sony DVW-A500.
I have a bunch of small spots 30 seconds each, with a 10 second slate.
I have the bars starting at 00:58:30:00 then the slate at 00:58:40:00 then the spot and 2 second beep at 00:58:58:00 01:00:00:00 … but by 5 minutes in, I am noticing my frames are off, my slate in coming in at 42 seconds instead of 40 and by 15 minutes I am noticing a bigger change to maybe 4 seconds … or something like that.
I recorded these spots off a tape, edited them slightly, now are re-recording them in this pattern. Why when I re-record them on to the tape they are adding on frames? The original tape was perfect same layout no frame probs?
I have Final Cut Pro 6.
