Print to tape from Timeline
Hello,
Does anyone have any experience “printing to tape from timeline”? When I do the normal “print to tape”, it takes a good 45 minutes for the system to render. The problem is I already have the file completely rendered and with 15 episodes to print to tape this is an extra 10 hours or so or work.
I saw on the final cut website that an option for exporting to tape is “printing to tape from timeline”. Since I have everything rendered already I thought this might be a great option to speed things up.
The question now is quality of the video.
Has anyone used this method and it has worked for them, or not worked? My concern is that I am printing a preview version and not actually the 1080 HD version.
Any advice?

I was using the standard “print to tape” function. This was for 25 minutes of HD video. The video was already fully rendered so I couldn’t figure out why it was taking another 45 minutes to print to tape (render) before it actually was ready to print to tape.
I am using a SONY HDW-D1800 deck and Kona card.

Are you in an HDV timeline? If so, FCP has to “conform” the entire timeline before you can print to tape. That’s one of the big drawbacks of HDV and why so many of us convert to HDV to something like ProRes or Uncompressed before editing.

If you are in a ProRes timeline and using an AJA Kona 1080 ProRes Easy Setup, then you should be using Edit to Tape and it should start pretty much immediately.
We Edit to Tape all the time using ProRes to Panasonic HD tapes via the Kona board and it’s something that should be ready to go immediately if everything is properly rendered.

Normally we use RS-422 or other VTR control to make the edit to a certain timecode. Typically for a broadcast show Black starts at 00:58:00:00, bars at 00:59:00:00 and the show starts at 01:00:00:00.
In order to make sure everything hits on time, you perform an Edit to Tape setting the exact timecode both in the timeline and the Edit to Tape window.
In our case, we set the In Point in the Sequence and Edit to Tape at 00:58:30:00.

Some things that might help-
Make sure you don’t have any disabled clips in your timeline. Delete them completely.
Select all in your timline, hit command-option-r to render a consolidated and temporary audio file, then open the ETT window.
Drag the sequence FROM THE BROWSER to the ETT assemble window.
Also, are you sure it’s fully rendered? Make sure your Sequence > Render Selection and Sequence > Render All menus have all of the options checked. Then render all, then try again.
