print to tape dvcam with 1080i sequence
Posted by Benoit Bodlet on January 13, 2011 at 2:07 pmHello everybody,
I need to print to dvcam tape a 1080i50 sequence on final cut pro. Should I export it to dv pal then reimport in a dv pal sequence (what presets?) Do I have to deinterlace? What is the best way to do it? Thank you very much. BJeff Greenberg replied 15 years, 4 months ago 4 Members · 4 Replies -

January 13, 2011 at 4:49 pmDo you have an I/O device or card that down-converts? If not, use Compressor to down-convert, with Frame Controls turned on, and “Better” scaling selected.
And, why would you deinterlace? There’s no reason, You’re doing from 1080i to interlaced DV.

January 13, 2011 at 6:14 pmwhat we have done is: export our 1080i50 sequence in dv-pal and then reimport this and print to tape. It seems good. But I’m sure it’s not the proper way…
We thought we ‘d better deinterlace because we are gonna show it in a local cinema. I may be wrong…
Well, thank you for you answer. So as I’m about to make it, I don’t need to deinterlace?
I don’t know if we have a i/o device or a card. what we have is a firewire that goes from the mac to the sony dsr-11. Sorry for the confused explanation. Greetings from Valencia (spain).B -

January 14, 2011 at 9:51 amDe-interlacing throws away a lot of information and then you are printing to an interlace source it makes no sense.
If you think you have to you should at least do it in Compression with Frame Controls on and De-interlaced set to BEST (as David said you want to down scale your video here also) This is not a quick process but it will give you a lot better quality.
So you export your sequence out as a Self-contained with Current settings and then down convert in Compressor, and if you must, do the de-interlacing at that time.
Also have you asked if the cinema can take a BluRay disc. That would project a lot better than a DV tape.

January 14, 2011 at 7:27 pmI can think of (at least) three ways to do this. Best is always a question of time/quality/money
1) Use a Snell & Wilcox or Teranex to downconvert
2) Output to a HD deck and reingest via the decks downconvert
3) Send your sequence to Compressor and have it do the downconvert there (the switch David Weiss mentions is good, but will increase compression time)
4) Drop your sequence into a DV sequence.Best,
