  • Print to Tape, add Time Code breaks for Recapture???

    Hi all,

I’ve got an unusual one for you, & I think it’s likely that there is no help for me in this case but I thought I’d ask anyway.

I am capturing HDV and then down converting the captured clips to uncompressed 8-bit. I am then printing those clips in bundles to DVCPro tapes for recapture on a PC system for SD editing. This is troublesome because when I recapture the footage on my PC it contains no indicators of beginning or ends of clips. Therefore I end up manually recapturing the footage all over again. I’ve been putting black space between clips to differentiate where one ends & the other begins. This, however, is far from an efficient process.

    My question is this:
Is there anyway to add a marker that would register as a Time Code Break or something of the kind to make recaptureing easier?

I’ve never heard of such a thing but I thought it never hurts to ask. Thank You for your time.

I would break up the clips, export/render them to the PC format for import there. Faster, cheaper.
If you offline on an Avid, Metacheater could work for you.

But, why not capture the downconvert from the HDV into the PC system?

My PC unfortunately for some reason can’t handle HDV footage (working with Vegas 7.0). I think it’s the limitations of my processor, which is a 3.2 GHz Pentium 4. Or more likely the software.

I didn’t know there was an option in FCP to export to a PC readable format. That would save me so much time. I thought that files rendered on mac were only readable on macs. Not so? Is there anyway to render an AVI? What the settings for export to transfer from mac to PC?

Thank You for your post that will be a tremendous help.

i don’t know anything about Vegas, but if it uses AVI, you probably loose TC info. (Metacheater works with Avid)
Conversion is no problem, Avi is, like QT, a container that can hold DV just as fine, so the conversion ‘could’ be painless if there was a way to get TC / reelname across.

BUT, any decent deck can output a downconverted SD DV signal from a HDV tape, and i would use exactly that to do your offline. Great quality, low on the processor.
