    Hi!

I am trying to print a .m2t file to hdv tape in my Z7U. I have Vegas 9e.
And when I select the file, I error message pops up with FILE TYPE IS UNKNOW.
    Very strange…..
The file is hdv 23,96 progressive, shot with Z7 and edit and redered in Vegas 9e.

    Any suggestions???

    Regards

    What template did you use?

HDV tape doesn’t support 23.976 progressive video. If you read the camera specs for the Sony Z7U is says:

In 24p mode, images from the CMOS can be 2:3 pulldown-converted and recorded onto tape in the standard 60i HDV format.

So what is recorded to the tape is actually 60i with 2:3 pulldown. I assume that is what you must print back to the tape.

    Thanks John!
I found an 0ne year post about the same issue and now I unsderstand a little better. Anyway, I check the specs od HVR M15 hdv deck form sony and it says ir supports 24p. Do you think in this case I could print the to tape??
The reason I need this copy is because after that I woudl make a copy/transfer to HDCAM in order to release the film in digital teathers.
    Thanks againg.

When the HVR M15 HDV deck says that it supports 24p it means 24p in a 60i wrapper just like your camera does. You can just as easily use your camera to print to tape.

There is no difference for HDCAM. It carries 24p in a 60i stream too. There are no 24p tape formats. It all gets wrapped in a 60i stream with 2:3 pulldown when going to tape.

I believe that all you need to do is print your project to HDV tape with your camera is to use the “HDV 1080-24p” template with one change. Just change the Frame rate from 23.276 to 23.976 + 2-3 pulldown and it should print.

    Tks, John!
    Very clarifying!
Just one more thing regarding the render. After I change the template I will start the render process. Should I render hdv60I??
    Regards.

What 2-3 pulldown does is bring the frame rate up to 60i so you can start with the 60i template and change the frame rate to “23.976 + 2-3 pulldown” or use the 24p template and change the frame rate to “23.976 + 2-3 pulldown” but the key is changing the frame rate to “23.976 + 2-3 pulldown” to preserve your 24p (which I assume you want to keep).

    Tks, John!
I will try it next monday. I only want to preserve 24p because of the film look. Thats the reason I shot 24p. But maybe I was wrong and there is a way to shoot progressive for film look without using 24p.
I am from the old interlace days(U-Matic and so on) and with the arrival of progressive video, the image became much more dramatic and ¨soft¨. Tks again.

    Hi John!
I hope you get this post!
After your inicial advice, I started a research and at the end I found out that Yes, HDCAM records 23,98 as it is without pull dowm.
It is the only format that does it. All the others works like you said – inserting and removing pulldown.

I took my original rendered file 23.98fps progressive to the finishing house in order to print to HDCAM tape and it worked. The only thing they had to do was re-renderd it to a prores422 codec because of FCP.

Thanks again and have a nice week!

I didn’t realize that. Thanks for getting back to us on it. I’m glad you got it all sorted out.
