Print Canon 7D to SD Tape
So I shot a video using the Canon 7D, imported and edited it in prores 422 and it looks amazing. Now the only problem is I need to export it to tape to be shown. Well when I throw the HD timeline in a NTSC DV timeline it looks like crap. Is there anything else I should try to do so it actually looks good when I print to tape?

That’s for sure.The quality of the stuff on-tape will depend of two things:
– The downscaling.
– The tape format.
The best option would be printing to Digital Betacam through a good video card.
the second best option is trying to make the best conversion to DV50 and printing to DVCPro50.

What kind of i/o card are you using? If AJA, as Rafael states, the best work flow is to let the i/o card do the down convert from the HD timeline. FCP does a bad job of down converting the way you describe. The other option would be to down convert using Compressor and then re importing that SD master file into FCP and outputting from there.

Don’t ever let FCP scale a HD image down in a SD timeline.
Best workflow here i think:
Export a quicktime movie with current settings in HD.
Open in Compressor.
Create a ProRes 422 or 10 Bit uncompressed SD preset.
Make sure you have frame controls turned ON, resize filter to BEST.
Submit.
Import the file in FCP.Now you have a great looking SD timeline which you can dump to DV through firewire.
Or to Digibeta through a SDI board like AJA, Matrox or Decklink.
