Wasn’t sure in what forum to post this, but here it goes…

Do your clients ever ask you to build print ads from their finished projects?

Mine do! The only problem is that I’m only working in 1080×1920. So, to transfer that to a 300D DPI 8×10 or whatever, never seems very practical.

The files just aren’t large enough.

Anyone deal with this? Any way around this?

Unfortunately AE just can’t handle the resolutions required for print. Generally one would need to go in the opposite direction (Print -> Video) to get decent results in both… and even then it’s not all fun and games 🙂

okay, that’s what I figured. I just wanted to check if anyone had any special way of dealing with this kind of situation.

They asked for a print ad after we had filmed the spot. It’s just not going to work out.

In my experience, most clients are completely clueless about this stuff. I’ve been asked, (and after explaining why it was a bad idea, commanded) to provide prints from even SD, DVCam video.

The best course in my experience has been to try and explain it to them, and when that doesn’t work, just give them what they want. They’ll either see that it can’t be done the way they’d hoped, or they won’t even notice the poor quality (which is very scary).

So generally speaking, voice your concerns, and then just give them what they want. At the end of the day it’s their problem, not yours – all you can do is all you can do.

Your clients just need to hire a PS geek with the chops to do the chore. There are several ways and plugins for Photoshop that will fill in missing pixels during an upscaling operation. It’s not out of the question at all to get a decent print out of HD video. But there are practical limitations.
