Pricing for Compression Services
Typically we serve as producers, taking on entire projects from start to finish. Recentlly however, we’ve been asked to provide Flash Compression services for another Production Company that is producing online videos for a client. Using some custom settings we’ve created, we’ve been able to deliver Flash files that are 40% smaller with equal or better video quality than they have been able to achieve.
The Question is how are Flash Compression Services being priced?
All our previous experience has been doing Flash compression as part of an entire production process. In this case, we are simply receiving Quicktime files that are approximately 5 to 15 minutes in length and being asked to deliver very small, high quality Flash files for the web.
Any suggestions on rates or how to price these a la carte compression services?

You could check with other service providers in your area. Market area is key. We are a smaller market with smaller budgets and we charge $80 for encoding of any kind. This includes the time to set up and encode. With presets and a decently fast computer a 5-15 minute video would fall within the hour. Shorter videos might only bill 1/2 hour.
But that’s our area and you might want to charge a setup fee, which we don’t. My setup is usually plugging in their drive to my computer.
