  • Previewing in After Effects

    Hi,

I am learning how to use After Effects and am noticing that when I try to Ram preview a comp, it moves REALLY slow, at about 2.5 fps.

When I look at the work my CPU’s are doing, they are working at about 3%.

    Something is not quite right.

Do you know how I can use as much of my 8 cores and 16gb as possible so that AE would be much more responsive and realtime?

It would be great to be able to work with it.

Also, the computer I’m on has a GeForce 8800GTX video card running DirectX 10, with 2 monitors connected to it. Is it possible to generate WYSIWYG real time previews with it?

    I am using AE CS4.

    Thank you very much,
    Mike

    Hi Dave,

Thank you for the info! I will become more acquainted with AE’s docs.

There is a lot to learn here and it’s exciting…

When looking at the docs for external previews, the text says:

“If you’re using a video card to connect an external video monitor, follow the directions that came with your video card to connect the monitor for viewing previews.”

I’ve not yet been able to find this, and am a bit at a loss as to what to look for. There seems to be nothing around previewing on external monitors for the docs.

Do you happen to have any ideas about this?

    Cheers,
    Mike

If you have a Decklink card that’s what you’d connect to the external video monitor. You can also use Firewire to connect to a box like the Sony Media Converter and connect that to an external monitor though its not a calibrated signal.

    Thank you Brian!

I do not yet have a DeckLink, though I am investigating it. I am using CS4 and it seems that the drivers are not yet available for it.

In the realm of these add on cards, I have noticed the DeckLink Extreme and Intensity, as well as the Matrox RTX2 and AXIO LE.

I am also considering getting an OpenGL accelerator board, like the GeForce 295, which seems to have a HDMI output.

Would you happen to know if the GeForce with it’s HDMI can provide real time preview?

And, would it be able to cooperate with a Matrox or DeckLink when they get they’re drivers together?

Or, would it be a total waste of money to think about using them both together?

    Thank you,
    Mike

    > You’re after HDMI? Get the card.

Thanks Dave. I’m not really after HDMI, I’m after realtime WYSIWYG previews and a responsive working environment. This is why I bought an 8 core 16gb machine. When you say “get the card”, can you please tell me which card you’re talking about?

    Cheers,
    Mike

    Thanks Dave,

    > Just don’t get it with the anticipation that you’ll be able to use its Open GL capabilities in AE.

Yes, it seems that AE will only accelerate SOME of it’s effects with OpenGL.

    The same for Matrox.

Also, I’ve since found that I can preview on the other monitor just with the dual-head video card I already have. Though it might be “better” with the Matrox or the OpenGL card, or the BlackMagic cards (which do not have a CS4 driver yet).

    > Personally, I have engineers who worry about hardware and hooking things up to monitors.

That’s lovely. One day I’ll enjoy the same. For now though, I am my engineer. 🙂

    Cheers,
    Mike
