  • PREview transitions and effects?

I am working on my very first film… so please bear with me!

In FCP, there are many filters and transitions, but on the basis of their name, I often cannot make out what they do, what the effect will look like. Is there a way to preview an effect or transition without first applying it to a clip? Because if I do that (apply it first), and don’t like it, I will have to remove it. That will be many actions if I am searching for the right effect or transition.

There just MUST be a better way, but I cannot find it. Basically, I am looking for a way to quickly see the effect of a filter, transition… without having to apply it to a clip.

    Thanks for a tip!

you’re out of luck, pal. no quick way to do it. over time you begin to know all of the transitions/filters/etc…but starting out you’ve got to make your best guess based on the name. it’s also not bad to try out a lot of different ones…you may find something you like you weren’t necessarily looking for. other than that, you could read the manual…but that would take a ton more time.

    best of luck.

Mirjam, you can preview the effect your filter settings will have by double clicking on the clip you want to affect. Click the filter tab in the *Viewer* pane, adjust the sliders and you will see the changes in the *Canvas* pane. The playhead in the timeline must fall within the clip you want to preview. If it is not, simply slide it to the clip you’re working on and cast your glance at the Canvas.

It would be mind-bogglingly difficult to apply filters if you couldn’t see what you were doing!

Good luck with your project, Matth
