Preview rendering very slow and laggy
Hi all,
I am experiencing an issue where the preview rendering is very slow, taking sometimes 30 seconds or more to render after scrubbing and I am trying to figure out why.
I have Googled and tried a number of common tips and tricks such as changing the resolution to a quarter, but that doesn’t seem to help.
Attached are my base computer specs as well as screenshots of my “Previews” “Video Preview” and “Media and Disk Cache” settings in Adobe After Effects 2024.
Any and all help/ideas are much appreciated – happy to provide more info if it would be useful as well!

I’ve found that the preview settings (on default right) works much better if it’s set to match the viewport settings. It’s almost as if you can fully see preRendered viewport frames in the green just fine if you scrub viewport, but once you hit Preview? (if they’re not matched full, half, quarter, etc) The preview will have to reRender all those frames again at the preview resolution. Does that make sense ?🤣 Just a thought. It’s helped me

In your timeline, you can click the render time button(or right click and add render time to your columns) and that will show you how long everything is taking to render. That way you can zero in on what is causing the slowdown. Without knowing your project, we are guessing blind, but things that can cause slowdowns are expressions with lots of calculations, large particle systems, and I’ve had issues just some effects/plugins not being optimized to work with newer releases of AE.
