  • Preview Monitor not showing on my BlackMagic Output with 4K footage

Posted by Christian Stoehr on March 15, 2013 at 3:30 pm

I am having trouble figuring out how to playback Red 4K footage thru my DeckLink HD Extreme 3D card.
When I make a 1080 sequence it plays back fine, but from a 4K or thru the Adobe Preview Monitor (on the left) it doesn`t play thru the card. Even so its set to 1/8 resolution.
I checked in the BlackMagic System Preferences and there isn`t anything there that makes sense.

    Thanks,
    Christian

That card won’t play out 4K. For that you need the Decklink 4K Extreme.

Besides…do you have a 4K monitor to watch this on?

No, and I don`t want 4K as output wither, I just wanted some internal premiere conversion, or the card to convert it to my 1080p for playback. I know they can convert to SD on the fly.
I have a large flatscreen in the edit bay for people to watch if they are in the edit room, so thats basically why I want to output also on the preview.

Yeah, neither Premiere nor the BMD cards do this downconvert. I know AJA cards will make 2K viewable as 1080…not sure if they do the same for 4K. But the BMD cards don’t do that for 2K or 4K. Gotta use a 1080 sequence if you want to monitor…or get the Decklink 4K card.

I am doing it via a 1080 sequence now. but I have to manually rescale every clip to match the sequence size. Even after selecting “Default scale to frame size” in the Generals Preference menu.
Kind of annoying to edit that way.
Otherwise the 4K Raw edit ability is nice, since its such a quick workflow without having to convert dailies.

[Christian Stoehr] “Even after selecting “Default scale to frame size” “

That feature needs to be set before you import. Enabling it after import does nothing. re-import your footage after that option is turned on and it should do the trick.
