Preview disabled – capture issue
I’m editing in FCP 5, using a sony DSR 70A, and when I first mounted the tape I could see picture in the logging window. I tried to digitize a clip and the warning light popped on. Now, even though I can control the deck via FCP the color bars and preview disabled remain visible. When I try to digitize it says there’s no video signal. I popped in another tape and it worked fine. The 2nd tape I tried is Sony, the first (and one I need to retrieve footage from) is fujifilm. I know there are lubrication issues between tapes and decks, but I was told fujifilm is okay for Sony gear. And I’d expect if it were a lubrication issue the 2nd tape wouldn’t have played. So I’m at a loss. Any ideas what’s happening or recommendations for fixing it?

Fuji is not my favorite brand.
Regardless, you might be better-off if you can connect two DV camcorders or decks TOGETHER vis FireWire.
Put both units in VCR mode (a deck, of course is ALWAYS in “VCR” mode).
Put a new Sony tape in one unit and get ready to RECORD on it.
Put the “problem” tape in the other unit, make sure it PLAYS in that unit, rewind and get ready to play it from the beginning.Record on the first unit as you make a straight-through copy of the “problem” tape.
Then rewind and ONLY capture from the Sony COPY (it will still be “first-generation quality”).I also use Panasonic brand tapes (hundreds of them) interchagably with Sony.
