Help! I am trying to capture HD footage down convert to DV. I keep getting the message “preview disabled” in the log and capture screen.

I have the easy setup in FCP set to “DV-NTSC”
on my camera i have the VCR setting to AUTO
    i.link conversion ON
    A/V-DV ON

still no luck. Is there something small that I am missing?

It’s probably the settings in the camera. Have it set to DV playback, and not “auto”… And use the “easy setup” for DV NTSC.

also when I change the camera setting to DV, i get the message “no output image in VCR DV/HDV. change format”

when i switch back to auto this message goes away.

Which Camera? sony something right? Might look in it’s manual… there’s nothing special you need to do in FCP, but there is a combo of settings to do this in the camera…

Might try trashing preferences in fcp: https://fcprescue.andersholck.com/

If you have a way to capture DV from another DV only device, try that to make sure you’ve no hardware/software problems in FCP.

    thanks for all your advice!

Now i found out that my footage has been shot in PAL format.

Is this why FCP is acting so weird? Does imovie handle pal ok?

YOu need to change the capture preset in FCP to match the recording… if it’s PAL, then set FCP up to capture it as such.
