    Hi,
I decided to upgrade my TASCAM Audio/midi usb to a Firestudio device. I installed it and had some success verifying installation (at least it would loop back to headphones and show levels in the right places). I may have the well known sync problems for this device but I’m sure it works at least some of the time. I then go to the options/preferences/Audio Device dialog and sure enough it shows FireStudio. I select that as the input device but Vegas Pro 10 (32bit) does not seem to accept any input from it. Even the audio track properties seem to offer the relevant settings.

Has anyone used this device? if so, do you have any settings advice?
no urgency, i’ve reverted to the tascam device 🙂
    thanks

You’ve got a blue light on the FSM right? Are you getting levels in the Presonus Universal Control app? I had lots of problems at first getting audio to appear, but once I got it, it’s worked pretty well for me. (I’m using the full sized Firestudio interface.)

    Hi,
when I put the unit in it flashes Blue/Red. Once the Universal Control comes up it goes to a solid blue – but once about every 30-45 seconds or so it goes red briefly. A mouse over the mixer goes busy at about the same interval.
If I fire up Studio One it goes thru its startup sequence but when it should be activating FireStudio device it puts up a warning and says the device “asked for a reset” 🙁 When I go to the Control Panel Sound App it shows the device there (windows has recognized it) and the green bars move when the microphone is used. When I ask windows to get the latest driver it says I have the latest.

I tried the device on another box and symptoms are much the same. I tried recording to the windows sound recorder and I had some success but when you play the recording my voice goes very deep until it sounds like its a tape that is being slowly forced to a stop 🙂

I think this is the device losing “synch”, but I don’t really know what that means in the OHCI context. I hope to resolve this by throwing in a pcmcia card with FW connections. That is one suggestion I found on the PreSonus forum.

My main worry is Vegas but if it works for you then I will persevere. I have sort of seen this before in a slightly different context; if I leave Vegas configured for my tascam/usb after it has been removed then Vegas goes into the same comatose state, where there are no faults reported but nothing works. Setting the audio device to something connect immediately resolves this.

I’ve made some progress on this. I added some extra FW ports on the laptop via a pcmcia card (I’m not convnced this helped but it may have). I switched the FW connection in the back of the box (again I dont think it helped). Mainly I noticed a new Unversal Control download on the PreSonus web page (that says it has Windows 7 support). I installed that and suddenly everything worked. So I think the moral of the story is ignore the CD that comes with the device and just get the latest from the Web. Vegas now accepts audio from the device.

I mentioned previously I had read about a “loss of synch” this device gets periodically; I don’t think that was what I had. That was probably just driver incompatibility that was resolved by the new driver.

However the device did disconnect for no good reason once after it was “working” and I think that is the “loss of synch” people refer to. But it does offer me better pre-amps than my old device and I’m looking forward to using it 🙂
