Presets won’t import

I’ve got same problem (OSX 10.5 and AE CS3)

I’m having a problem with loading presets from Bridge. I haven’t used Presets for a couple of months so I not sure when or what I did to get this. I’m getting the message —- After Effects error: Can’t import file “XXX.ffx” unsupported filetype or extension.

I’m running Windows XP SP2 and CS3 with all the latest updates and patches. Anyone have any suggestions?

A friend sent me this info and it worked for me:

“Add an element in your comp back in AE that can “catch” the effect. For example the alien face effect will not load unless I have a shape layer AND a shape defined that will be taken over by the template.”

1. Make a new comp
2. Create a solid
3. then try importing the pre set or effect, it should come in to AE just fine

In Bridge:

Preferences > Startup Scripts

Make sure Adobe After Effects CS4 is checked.

Click OK.

Close Bridge and After Effects (don’t forget to SAVE in AE! 🙂

Restart both.

Should work fine, if not that’s all I’ve got for ya.

I got the same problem but I found out a way to get over it.

When you select the desired preset in Bridge, don’t double click. Instead, right click and choose: Place in After Effects.

It worked for me and I hope it does the same with you.

I was having the same problem and finally figured out that the text has to be highlighted and active rather than just activating the the layer bounding box.

I was getting the same message in CS5 until I noticed AE was opening Bridge CS4. Changed the pref in Bridge 4 and 5 and now I can double click to add presets with no error message.

Hey! Buddies, Read ME:

First of all make sure you programs Adobe AE & Bridge both of them must be opened,for this trick, and another important thing to make sure that you must open your project in AE and make at least one Composition to insert the file in it, them minimize the Adobe AE & Switch to Adobe Bridge Select your “Name.ffx” file them Right Click on it, and then from the menu select the bottom one called “Place in After Effects” it works 100% and Good luck,

You are a “Steely-Eyed” Rocketman!!! Great fix! Not as detailed as I would ave liked as a novice using a 30 day trial of AE… but none the less, it worked! I appreciate the assist.
