  • Preserve quality going from 4/3 to 16/9?

    Hello there,
I have seen this topic touched on a little bit here and there, but I’m still not clear on this. Is someone willing to be longwinded 🙂

    1. Can you import 4X3 footage (framed 16X9)and then output a 16X9? How?

    2. Somewhere someone said you have to deinterlace and lose half your resolution. Can you not just crop the image and enlarge to fit a 16X9 and then use some program or plug in that can smooth out the jaggies caused by the enlargement?

    3. Would any footage treated in this way be useless for home video or broadcast purposes?

Am really trying to give my 1/2″ 3CCD SD more life. Help?

If you want the footage to fit in the frame (meaning no black, or graphics on the sides), you have to zoom IN the footage. You will have some quality issues, likely pixelation and noise. How much depends on how good the original footage was, and what compression was used. The other problem of course is that you will also lose the top, and / or bottom of that original footage (you can pan to show either one, but it can be a real pain)

Will is be ok for broadcast? I don’t know, that’s up to the station after they view the footage. I’d say if it’s SD, and it’s the entire feature, probably not… Don’t forget that many stations are now going HD, so bad SD becomes a little more noticable.
