Can anyone point me to links to read up on prepping for digital delivery to a TV station?

    For instance:

the best codec for delivery (mpeg2 @ 18-25MB/s or ?)
DVD -vs- downloading from an FTP server (:15/:30 spots)
bars/leaders-slates/black timing at the head & tail of the spot
waveform adjustments for setup and proper legal color control
anything else I am overlooking. 🙂

We usually send out spots on Beta SP. However, this current project will go to 75 stations and we are looking for some ways to save some cabbage without screwing the pooch.

We have looked at a company specializing in taking our spots and hosting them on a server, and pushing them out to the stations (which might need to be on the network?). However, they end up being more $$$ than the SP delivery path.

I did check Ken Stone’s site to see if he covered the topic. Maybe the topic is easily viewed somewhere else?

Thanks for any link or comments you can offer.

How about audio levels for the color bars versus what’s in the program?

working in the UK, i use a service called Adstream. I send a single advert to them (either on digibeta or via upload to ftp. They then send it on to every station you request at a set fee for each item sent.

The service i get is fantastic – they are quick and helpful and are so much more cost effective than sending tapes. We used to get charged

What are the specs of the stations? That’s your first step right there. You can’t deliver anything less than what the stations expect from you.

Usually it’s 30sec of bars at -20db tone with your audio peaking no higher than -10db. 10sec of slate, 10 sec of black, countdown then your program. Some stations still require the setup at 7.5 even though they are excepting it digitally. That’s why as Walter stated you need to check with the station, don’t feel stupid asking them, they are usually pretty helpful and greatful that someone actually asked.

    Yep, as one example:

One Network I deliver to is 1 minute of black, 30 seconds of bars, 20 seconds of slate, ten seconds of black, then project start. Audio peak no higher than -4db digital.

Another network is 2 minutes of black, 40 seconds of bars, 10 seconds of black, 10 second slate all the way down to 1. Audio levels must not peak higher than -18db.

Two very different specs and if I were to simply deliver one spec to the other network, it would be rejected.
