  • Prepping for DVD Creation – looking for best practices for settings

Posted by Lawrence Eaton on January 19, 2016 at 5:19 pm

I thought I’d seen the last of my blue drinks coaster media, but low and behold,no!

So simply, can anyone suggest a best practice document or better still any particular settings they’ve discovered to create the magic sauce, please?
    Here are my thoughts:
    1) Output Master file from FCPX
    2) Import to Compressor
    3) Use Create DVD destination
    4) Cringe and wait patiently as I burn through a stack of DVD’s finding the quality to encoding to bit rate balance I need.

Can anyone help me out please? More specifically, what settings for a Master file, if any, would be ideal and then what settings in Compressor would be ideal?

    Regards,

    Lawrence

i’d go ProRes so you have a solid enough source for the MPEG2 downconvert. It often looks better than going straight from a timeline to MPEG2- for whatever reason.

    Noah,

I went with a Master File with ProRes 422HQ – just because. Output was, quite happy to say, exquisite. When I used the Create DVD destination in Compressor, the end result looked a tad ‘feathered’ or out of focus. Would this be a factor of down encoding to MPEG2?

That would depend on your settings in Compressor but considering it’s highly compressed MPEG2 @ 720×480 vs the 1920×1080 ProRes or better I’m assuming you’re coming from… it is what it is.

Might want to confirm you’re doing something like: https://larryjordan.com/articles/compressor-dvd-compression-settings/

Did you input that file by hand into Compressor?

Or did you “Send to Compressor”?

I too am attempting to burn some DVD-Videos, and it aint pretty.

    Patrick,

I shared out from FCPX with a ProRes422Hq Master File (default) – see attached image.

After that, it was using the “create DVD” destination in Compressor and clicking “Start Batch”
