  • Preparing footage for compositing

    HI
I use a lot of ‘found footage’ for compositions. sometimes it is mpeg 2 from dvd and sometimes I use a variety of compressed material. Old telly programs and movies etc These are often div x or some such compression.
I was wondering if anyone had any advice on preparing such footage for keying
I know it will vary a whole lot depending on the footage in question but any basics steps that could make my job easier in first stage preperation of footage would be most welcome.
I have a basic understanding of AE and Photoshop. Familiar with using channels to make a mask in PS etc. I am not really after tutorials on how to use the various keys in AE per se. I have read up about the differences between them and uses etc. It is more a basic approach to preparing the footage that would be of use to me. Or perhaps third party plug ins ?
If that all makes sense ?? I hope it does.
I am using 6.5 pro btw and mostly work with uncompressed or Huffy footage for the actualy compositing.
Thanks in advance for any advice and congrats again on an excellent resourse

i personally wouldn’t bother keying until i was working with uncompressed footage, as the keys you pull would vary due to the compression. you’d end up making more work for yourself… but if you’ve got time on your hands – then it’s all good 🙂
