    Hi Guys,

I am editing some work for an advertising agency, and one thing i’m not clear on is how to make the video broadcast safe. Also what requirements to TV channels want regarding how much black before start, and whether you need a countdown. I’m based in the UK.

    Thanks a lot!

Here’s a litte primer I created to help ensure broadcast safe in FCP

But prior to this, you need to make sure you have done all proper color correction on the piece. Actual broadcast specs will vary depending on the broadcaster you’re delivering to.

The FCP broadcast safe filter doesn’t stay safe after render in many cases. For the past few years I have been using the RGB Limit plugin that does levels and chroma but recently I had some shots that didn’t limit to broadcast safe after render.

I have since discovered a third party plug that does white, black and chroma legal for FCP called the Sweet Legalizer. It is part of a grading suite package and when you download the demo, the legalizer is free. Info here –

So far so good. It seems to do a great job.
