  • Preparing FCP commercial edit for NBCU broadcast

Posted by Haik Kavookjian on January 3, 2013 at 1:54 am

I was asked to edit a short commercial that will air on an NBCU cable channel and would love some guidance. I’m strictly a web guy and have no idea how to handle broadcast.

Here is a link to NBCUniversal’s commercial guidelines and technical specifications: https://nbcuni.force.com/commops

It’s an SD commercial that I will be submitting digitally. So far I’ve figured out that I need color bars, tone and a slate at the beginning, but I don’t want to miss anything.

Has anyone dealt with NBCU before? I’m sure I’m asking too much, but perhaps there is a convenient tutorial that walks you through everything you need to do to prep the material…

    Thanks!

    Hi Haik

As you have no doubt worked out supplying for broadcast means your file has to conform to the spec laid down by NBCU. While I have not supplied material to them (I am UK based) I have supplied programmes to many UK and some US broadcasters.
Other than the things you mention, Bars tone & slate you need to make sure that your video and audio levels are correct and within the limits they set in the spec.
You also have to make sure your pictures are the correct aspect ratio and that any captions or titles are in the relevant safe area. The start timecode must also be correct. (01:00:00:00)

Those are the main points that will be picked up on immediately when you submit your file.

I noticed that one of the guys here has recently produced a free guide to commercial delivery.
I have not read it however he is a very experienced editor and I would guess that it contains some very useful info for you.

Probably a good place to start

    best wishes
