prep multicam sequence for color correction out of house
trying to get my multicam sequences to a colorist working with Resolve
when I test a short multicam sequence (which consists of just cutting back and forth between two takes/cameras) with the project manager, I end up with a dataset that is over 150GB and includes media NOT in the test multicam sequence (it should be a 10th to 100th of that). I’m making sure I am choosing JUST the sequence in the project manager and all the other appropriate settings, as laid out by the colorist who has more experience with PP than myself.
The colorist indicates to flatten the multicam sequence and indicates it should be under clip> multicam> flatten. I don’t see this choice in the clip menu (greyed out or otherwise) and searching for flatten (In PP or in the adobe database) does not return any hits.
I thought I would post since CCow folks might have a better idea on how to go about getting the colorist a multicam sequence with handles. OR might have more context on using the project manager – I loved the media manager in FCP7, and had hoped the Project Manager was just as straightforward.

What version of PPro are you running?
I see it when I have a multicam clip selected in the timeline…

I’d do this in a duplicate of the multicam sequence that you are prepping for the colorist…. not the multicam enabled master sequence you have been editing in.
Flattening basically reveals the underlying source clip and replaces the multicam nest placeholder you’ve been editing with….
also…once you have done the flattening….
if you are trying to reduce the media set…
I think you will need to Project manage the sequence and consolidate and transcode the sequence to a format that supports trimming the media with handles (i’d guess anyway)…
this is also a newer feature…

I see it thanks – it was not coming up in any searches within or outside of the application. I am not sure what it is doing, though as the only indication I am getting that ANYTHINg is happening is that the clips go from light green to light blue.
any other resources you can point me to?
I have version 9.2 or PP CC2015.2 release (which one do people go by ?)

if you have labels on and a clip is a multicam clip it will start with [MC#]
this means that PPro understands it as a multicam clips and it’s functioning sort of as a “window” to whatever source layer you are choosing in the source sequence is pointing to…
when you”flatten” you essentially are saying, replace this pointer clip with the actual clip it’s referring to….
that’s why it’s important to do it in a copy of the sequence. Once you make that change… it’s difficult to go back should you need to make multi-cam revisions…

I do understand what is going on under the hood (and I am doing the copy, that is a great suggestion).
I guess I was hoping for more of a concrete indication of what was happening, while I was in the app.
However, this did not work either – in fact the data set that I got from this one was BIGGER by a coupla GB than the other where I did not flatten it.
I’m stumped!

Hmmm…..
that does seem odd….
are you transcoding/trimming?
it may be if you are going from something like a h264 to a Prores…
your data set could potentially be larger…
certainly the number of files would be greater, because you are ending up with a file for each cut.

thanks for your response. Getting back to this after a week vacation!
H.264 already transcoded to ProRes. Just two camera angles with a minimum number of cuts.
I shot some stuff with a gopro on this shoot to potentially use in other sequences, but not this one. So I should not have gopro files in the final dataset, but I do! and many other files that are not in this sequence.
maybe they will update this feature soon.
