Activity Forums Adobe After Effects Prep AI layers for AE (complex artwork, but only certain layers need animating)

    I would do the prep work in Illustrator, where it’s a lot easier to see what you’re doing.

    When you import .AI files into Ae, you have the option of importing as a composition. Each layer in Illustrator will be a layer in After Effects, and if there are multiple shapes in the same layer in Ai, they’ll be smushed together into a single layer in Ae.

    To get everything you need on its own layer in Ai, you use “Release to Layers (Sequence)” and then re-arrange a little bit:
