FRUSTRATED!! Last night I copy/pasted sequences and their source clips from multiple mini projects into a new big project. I then deleted those mini projects to create more room on my hard drive after all the clips were copied over. When I pulled the new project up again, all my media was offline, as I knew it would be. However, for some reason, Premiere Pro is not automatically relinking source clips once I reconnect one clip to its media file – I am having to relink every clip manually, and it’s taken me 1.5 hours already!

I am so afraid that I will have to do this every time I open this project up. Why isn’t it relinking the rest of the source clips automatically? Will Premiere Pro save the locations of the clips, or am I doomed to have to spend hours manually relinking every time I go to open the project? Please help!

Premiere will save the new file locations.

If this happens in the future then type “offline” into your media bin search bar. This will display all offline project content so select all. Right click to reconnect and Premiere will be smart enough to find relinked files if you choose the main folder everything is in (it’ll drill down a reasonable number of sub-directories). It rarely fails unless the files are fundamentally different or the folder structure of your source footage is spread out all over your hard drive or is otherwise a horrendous mess.

Ok, this does reassure me, however, my files are not a horrendous mess, but Premiere is not automatically relinking the entire folder if one file from it is re-connected. I am still having to manually re-link every. subclip.

I’m not sure if this applies to your workflow or not, but if someone comes looking hopefully this helps them.

The folder structure that premiere pro searches I believe is sequential. Once it finds a file that is correct it stops looking.

Where I think your problem might be is that more than one file is acceptable. So it searches. Finds an appropriate file, and when it searches for the second file, it finds the first file. So it stops completely.

How I structure my workflow to make this work for me is to first set up my folders as such.

Notice how my proxy files are listed above my HQ files. This is so when premiere pro starts searching for folders, it will look through the proxy folder first. I have it set up this way, because I am taking this photo at a point in my project where I wanted to link the proxy files to my work instead of the 1920×1080 files that I will use later in the render.

Lastly make sure your files are named the exact same.

on the top is the proxy file list, and on the bottom is the HD files. You have to make sure they are identical (except for the extension).

Lastly make sure your settings when you’re searching for clips is set up properly.

Ensure you are not searching for the clip name, ensure that the automatically linking files is checked. Your project might differ if you have set it up differently though.

Lastly, there is a “show exact matches” on the screen AFTER you press locate. If you have this checked, you will only find the file that was last linked to that clip. This may or may not be what you want.

    Hope this helps someone!
