November 16, 2005 at 3:29 pmJust wanted to add…I think there is one major feature left our of PPro at this time that everyone would have to agree on…Time Remapping!!…every other app has this and has for some time.
This is an essential part of the editorial process…if this was the only addition to 2.0, they’d have my money!
Other than that, better media management and improved integration with the “collection” would be on the top of my list, as well as applying custom/compiled effects to multiple clips via hot buttons(like AE).
I really like what I see in Axio, but having your Matrox effects carry over into AE would be essential for my workflow.
A little dissapointed we haven’t heard anything from Adobe at NAB Post so far this week…stay tuned.

November 16, 2005 at 3:38 pm[Mike Cohen] “I would imagine the Adobe lunch room has the walls lined with printouts from these boards.
Once a week a bearded man in a flannel shirt walks into the room, there is a hush among the programmers, half eaten bowls of rice pudding are left on lunch trays as the selection begins. One rubber stamp which reads “fabuloso” is applied to selected feature requests, while the rest remain untouched.
Then a week later the selected features are demonstrated to the bearded one, and whittled down again to the final few which go into the update. It takes many great ideas to make a few fantastic ones.
Then when the update comes out, there are some who love the new features, some who complain about missing ones, and others who criticize even the new features, but who use them anyway.Sound familiar?”
He he…well, there are a lot of products from Adobe these days…they’d need a few more walls.
I have a feeling that how many sheer “requests” each feature has is considered along with how easy it may fit in with the next version…or since one area of the software may be up for a big redesign in the version after…maybe the feature would be easier to integrate into the re-tooling as opposed to “retrofit” into the existing…etc.
Also…as you’re approaching release and one particular feature that you’ve added has broken so many things that it is either going to delay release by 6 months, or it needs to be removed…there’s a decision to make there as well.
You are correct, there’s no pleasing everyone… I was a HUGE detractor of dropping AB timeline editing…it was so easy to train as it was very visual. It needed to go to create the new system where we can put transitions on any track, etc. Now, I would never go back.
I guess everyone (including me) wants change…until they get some. 🙂

What’s “every other app”? I know Vegas has it, I’m sure Quantel and Dicreet have it…Does Avid have it on the system that would be price-competitive with PPro? I suppose Liquid Edition does?. FCP? I’m not sure about Velocity, Media 100, Media Studio Pro, XPRI, Cinegy, I know Edius doesn’t…
I think since Adobe has this tool in the stable with AE (which you have or you wouldn’t call the feature “time re-mapping”), they have it “in the family” so to speak. I suppose that might lead them to prioritize other areas.
Again…your assertion that “everyone would have to agree” on this feature as being a “major” feature just isn’t the case. That doesn’t mean you’re off-base asking for it, it just means that that feature may not be the highest priority coming from every voice giving input.
I have it on my list…

November 16, 2005 at 4:19 pmFCP, Xpress and Vegas all have some form of Time Remapping…so yes, In my eye, I think all the main competitors have it.
Yes it’s in AE but from a workflow perspective, I feel it’s a big void. This is an editorial function and these decisions should be executed in your NLE.
If you go to Adobe’s forums, you’ll see multiple, “how do I ramp time” questions from new users(coming from other apps) and several emphatic feature requests for this from long-time users.
My point is that time remapping is fairly significant when compared to many of the keyboard or tool requests people are moaning about…:-)

I guess you guys have never used an NLE as timeline efficient as edit* Otherwise you wouldn’t think so. And this is from someone who uses time warping ( an edit* name ) extensively. Believe me when I tell you that the most frustrating thing about PPro from my perspective is the inefficient, and sometimes very clumsy, way I’m forced to do things in the timeline. Maybe I’ll eventually get over it but I sure hope that the design team leaders can sit down with an experienced edit* user and get enlightenment 🙂

…and for those of us who may not cozy up to the way edit* worked?
…also…illustrating my point once again…for every top priority, there is someone who thinks that can wait because there are three others…
This thread may continue until PPro v3 is out…

November 16, 2005 at 9:21 pmif you look at the adobe.com page for Premiere Elements 2.0, I wonder if these consumer-ish features are coming our way: import video from DVD, cell phone, DVD camcorder – export for variety of devices such as phone or pda – thumbnail transition animations like premiere 5 used to have – templates for dvd menus…?
Lets hope we don’t get these features unless they come with some of the pro features we have been pontificating about.

I agree that there is room for improvement regarding the functionality of tools, keyboard mapping, etc…and some of these may be addressed under, “improved toolsets and workflow” when the release comes out…
but I think you’ll see the top of the list highlighting things like…Multicam, True HDV Support, Better Media Management, Improved Video Collection Integration, Masks, Additional Effects…and hopefully…Time Remapping…;-)
Hope there’s “something for everone” when we get the news!

Although I’m sure you don’t mean it (because you seem like an intelligent guy :), it could be inferred that you mean all workflows are equal – in the eye of the beholder, so to speak. Well, for someone who insists on an inefficient workflow (A/B editing for example) I say let them have it! Just give me the option to work efficiently.
