Premiere Wish List Redux
Since I’m not in the beta program, I can only guess what might be in store for v.2.
One thing I’m hoping for is a no-brainer – better integration with other Adobe programs. “Project import” and “edit original” don’t really do it for me. I want to be able to select a portion of my timeline or clips in my bin, and simply select “Open in After Effects (Photoshop, Audition, Encore). The selected application would open with matching project settings, containing my selected footage. When I finish whatever I want to do there, I save the changes, which would update my original Premiere project.
This could be difficult for Adobe to implement, since it might involve concurrent updates to all the listed applications, but it’s time for Adobe to use their strengths (best of breed applications including After Effects and Photoshop; and a large development team) to improve Premiere to the point that it simply surpasses the competition.
I’m excited about taking search tools like Version Cue and Bridge in Photoshop CS2 and bringing them into Premiere. This would be a large step in making Premiere more friendly to long form / complex projects, where search tools become very important.
I see a largely untapped market for Premiere; taking advantage of the 90% penetration of PCs and new professional edit engines like Axio. If Adobe makes the decision to make Premiere best of breed, they could steal the market back from Apple and make a lot of money in the process.
But to get there, Adobe must develop a more sophisticated toolset and improve media management without sacrificing it’s strong point: simplicity. Clever design and improved integration are two ways of achieving that.
