    Ok – weird bug?

All my windows – Project, Monitor, etc. have completely gone AWOL. They are not there. Before you lambast me – I’ve been an editor for over 20 years and have used many systems dating all the way back to the early Montage ones which were one of the first non-linear editing consoles.

IOW, I’m not an idiot. Well, not entirely, anyway.

The system I am working on is a mid-2014 Macbook Pro. I usually edit with it connected to a 24″ external monitor via thunderbolt and a 34″ program monitor via hdmi and that is how the system is set up at the moment. This evening, I opened up a project I had been working on earlier in the day and noticed that all I could see was my project & bins window in its usual spot on my MBP’s native display. The 24″ monitor had nothing but the OS background. I went up to “windows” thinking maybe I accidentally closed some windows but all the checkboxes for sequence, program, audio, etc. were already checked. I selected them anyway but nothing happened. I hit apple-w and the checkbox in the window menu goes away, but when I re-select the item, the window still doesn’t appear. If I open a new window that I don’t usually use, like “story” or “captions” it appears fine and closes fine.

Before you get smart and tell me it’s on the 3rd monitor, I already checked that, too. I even disconnected it to no avail. As well as restarted the system, changed resolutions, disconnected all external monitoring, mucked around with every preference I could find… you get the drift. I also switched window “layouts” which only made my previously available project window disappear, too, and adding to my already lamentable situation. Something is eating my Premiere windows and everything I’m trying has failed!

    But…

In the middle of writing this, I discovered the problem so I’ll just amend the end of this post in case this happens to anyone else.

While flipping back to Premiere to try a few things I hadn’t thought of, I noticed a slight anomaly on my desktop. A tiny, narrow sliver of white no bigger than a text cursor – maybe only a couple of pixels wide and perhaps 20 pixels tall, I’m talking infantesimally small here. Almost completely lost on the lightish background that is my desktop picture. On a hunch, I grabbed it with my cursor and lo & behold, out stretched my entire editing space! No clue how it got to be that way and, in fact, when I try to grab the corner of my entire editing window conglomerate and shrink it back down again I could only get it as small as the 3 traffic lights that are standard for the Mac OS windows. As small as that even is, what had been the last remnant of my workspace was as tall as that but only mere pixels wide.

Put that glitch in your pipe, lol! For anyone else this happens to… may you find this post before you go mad…

Montage…hum. I think I saw that at NAB in Dallas many years ago. If I recall it used a group of vhs vtr’s to shuttle you through your footage. At the time I was editing on the CMX 340x with Ampex 2000’s.

So this exact thing has happened to me. I was using premiere just fine, and then decided to use apple tv. I mirrored my screen and realized premiere was small on my laptop. I then proceeeded to expand the window to the resolution of my apple tv. After I finished, I shut down apple tv, but the window was still stretched. When it returned to normal, it glitched red and disapeared. Now no matter what I do (new project, restart, shut down etc…) I can’t see any windows. When i do the apple show all Windows feature it just has the name of my project in grey. If anyone has this figured out help would be great. Thanks!

If the end of my original post above (which shows how I resolved the issue) doesn’t work for you. Try changing the resolution of your screen and then switching it back to what you had before. Otherwise, I’d force quit the app and relaunch.

This just saved me from having to reinstal the whole program again. Turned out my problem was similar, just that the window got shoved totally off the side of one screen. I didn’t see the line until I was mousing around and noticed the arrow change to drag at the edge of the screen.

    Cheers dude.
