Premiere: what’s with the endless conforming?
Hello everyone. Recent FCP convert here trialling PP. I’ve struck a weird problem/feature on a project I’m using to evaluate the feasibility of the software. The project is made up of about 180 clips which are a mixture of FS100 AVCHD files and GoPro H264 files. I open the project up fresh to work on it each day and Premiere conforms each and every clip, regardless of whether it has conformed them in the past or not. I sit back and wait for it to finish, as I’ve read working whilst conforming can lead to errors. What’s more frustrating is whenever I work in the project – for example perform some edits or even just play back a clip – Premiere conforms more clips! Not the clip I’m working on but completely random ones. I flushed out my Media Cache folder this morning and let it reconform from scratch and there’s currently 383 items sitting in there, odd given the project only has about 180 clips. Also, the waveform and audio disappear at random, reappearing after the conform loop finally gets around to rereading the clips in question. Premiere has suddenly decided to conform another 15 clips whilst typing this post..
Any idea what on earth is going on? This is not a working environment I want to impose on our facility – if I can’t work out a solution I’m afraid we’ll have to return to FCP7, which would be a shame because there are some fantastic benefits to Premiere.
I’m running Premiere 6.0.2 on OSX 10.7.2. Machine is a pretty heavily specced out Mac Pro. Media stored on a network Synology Diskstation. In case anyone mentions it working on locally stored media is NOT an option at my facility due to the shared nature of the projects and large amounts of data. We’ve never had any issues with performance or permissions in the past working off this drive.

Something on the media drive is changing every day causing Premiere Pro to be confused. Some files are not matching, likely XMP. Try changing your preferences for Media cache files to save media cache files next to original. This might help. Also, try testing some files by running them from a local disk, not a shared one. See if you still have the same problems.

I had this same problem but that was back with cs3 and cs4, it was related to avi files and how premiere was compatible with avi2 and not avi1 type containers, I would have to batch convert to avi2 and then import to premiere or it would endlessly conform audio.
But I see you are working with mts and h264 they seem to work seamlessly with cs6 for me, so I would suggest the external drive is the issue, you might look at setting up scratch disks.. If you haven’t already.

Thank you for the responses. I’ve run the test working off local media and gotten the following two results:
1) Copied media from network drive to local drive, imported local media into new project: no issues whatsoever. PP conformed one, then functioned perfectly.
2) Copied same media from network drive to local drive, copied network project we are having issues with to local drive, disconnected from network drive and reconnected to local media: same issues of disappearing audio and endless reconforming.
My media settings are as follows:
Checked ‘Save next to originals’
Media Cache set to local drive
Everything else unchecked (was previously checked with same results)
Scratch disks are set to local driveAnyone know why I’m still having the issues in the second scenario?

Success! The endless conforming and disappearing audio has gone!
One or all of a combination of the following appears to have helped fix the issues:
* Synced the time on the shared network storage drive with the Macs
* Trashed the PP preferences
* Shifted the projects from a shared local drive to the system drive (default PP location)We’re still working with media stored on the shared network drive but now all the projects are kept on the system drives of the local machines.
I’m pretty chuffed it’s fixed – I have to say coming from FCP 7 there are a range of features I’m really loving, such as the lack of transcoding, good real-time playback, enhanced bezier functionality of keyframes, AE, AME and Audition integration. Thanks for the support above.
