This is a workflow question and perhaps I am doing things backwards. I am editing together a sequence which was shot under a blacklight and I would like to apply a glow effect from After Effects in order to enhance the glow created by the blacklight.

I made all my edits in Premiere and exported the section of video then created a new comp in AE so I could apply the glow and go on with my life. My problem is that the source footage is not evenly exposed so I end up needing more and less glow throughout the sequence.

I could keyframe it in AE but I thought that there was perhaps a better way to approach this? I have several edits in Premiere.

What I tried is going through my Premiere sequence and deleting all my dissolves then importing my premiere project directly into AE and applying my glow seperately to each cut as they came into Premiere. Problem is that when I export the comp I end up with cuts which do not allow me to RE-insert my dissolves.

I know this must be a workflow issue. For now I am going to keyframe the glow effect to meet deadline but I would like to know the answer so that I can better attack this issue when I encounter it in the future. Now that I am using Premiere as my main editing platform I want to exploit all the integration opportunities that I can.

    Thanks

    Fermin

PS: I tried saving the AE project as a Premiere project but when I opened the Premiere project I got an error telling me that the effect “Glow” did not exist. I also just thought of another trick I might try which would be to use the dynamic link – But I don’t know the workflow in order to get that to work.

    hi there, good day 🙂

okey, what I always do when combining AE and PP(most of the time for footage and advanced color correction and simple animation) is the following.
    1) cut your footage in PP (and delete the stuff you don’t like) roughly
    2) go in AE (you should have find the “list” I made in like 200 post, always the same and very helpfull to everyone) and import your stuff.
    3) apply all the things you like(glow, color correction filters etc etc). save
    4) import in PP and cut exact, use transitions and export.

Why not cutting exact and use transitions in step 1? I saw in a couple of times that when you use transitions, it sometimes comes in differently in AE (as a seperate layer). most of the time it will work and you can “cut and use transitions” in step one. step “5” will be only exporting in PP 🙂

for real high animation stuff between your footage, this is another story. if there are few, use dynamic link. alot yeah render it out in full quality and import it in AE

for some overview the “list” :

-Edit your clip in Premiere. than save your project.

-open After Effects. file>import, then import your Premiere Pro project file.

-now you see your clips in the project panel and very important a sequence file (it’s called that way I thought).

-double click on that sequence file (important: do not move it into the timeline, just double click). and all your seperate scenes/shots/files (cut in Premiere pro) appear in the timeline in AE as seperated layers (also transitions and styles from Premiere PRo are imported).

-then use coole effects on them separedly. if you wanne render in AE, your done here.

    render out in Premiere :

-then save your AE file. and if you wanna render it out in Premiere pro, just open the AE project file in Premiere.

-then only 1 clip will appear, but you’ve edit this the first time in PP and allready applied effects on it in AE, so no prob there 🙂

i tried dynamic link, but this is only a options for 1 scene/dvd menu or whatever per sequence. only usefull if you wanne see direct result between AE and PP. not with a movie with 200 shots or so:P

Don’t know what versions of AE and PPRO you’re using but you can take the AE7 Glow filter and use it in Premiere CS3 by coping it to the AEFilters plugin folder. I could not get the AECS3 version to work in Premiere but v7 filter is the same thing.
It’s very convient being about to use the Glow filter in Premiere.
