I have been away from video editing for about two years due to job. Recently the nature of my job has changed and I will have some time to return to hobby level video editing.

I have questions in two areas: software and hardware.

Software. I have Premiere Pro 1.5. What has been added to Premiere in 2.0 and is it worth the upgrade for an entry level hobbiest?

Hardware. I have a Gateway 1500XL which is getting a little old. It has the following components: Intel 1.5GHz Pentium 4 processor and motherboard, 768MB RDRAM PC800 memory (3x256MB), two 75GB 7M Ultra ATA100 hard drives, 32 MB ATI Radeon AGP Graphics w TV-Out and DVI, 16x/48x DVD-ROM drive, 12x/8x/32x CDRW drive, 1394 IEEE PCI card, USB 1.1, Gateway FDP1800 digital LCD display (18.1″ viewable, 1280×1024). I also have a Western Digital 250GB external hard drive and a Sony DVD/CD Rewritable(DVD+-RW+-R)external drive both configured thru firewire. The operating system is Windows XP Home. Is this system worth upgrading or is it easier/better to go with a new system?

You really need to consider a PC upgrade. The USB connections are out of date, as is the graphics card.

The advantages of Premiere 2.0 are spelled out on this page:

Thank you — Any off the shelf system that you could recommend.

I would wait until the middle of this year if you are not in too much of a hurry. The next version of premiere will be coming out around then.

Not only that, but the prices of systems are staying the same, yet the power is increasing quite a bit. I bought a dual core chip, but now the quad core chips are shipping.

As for off the shelf, I have always been happy with my Dell PCs, but this last time I went to a PC guy and had one built.

Again, how credible is your source about ‘next version’ release? Even though Adobe ‘always’ keep its secret to the last minute, last time, there were some leaks… therefore, not ‘always’?

It came from the horses mouth. Adobe said “mid 2007”. Take it for what it’s worth.

In my experience, unless you can’t live without multi-cam editing capability, it’s NOT worth the money!!.. I would wait for what’s they have to offer in next ver…
