    Hello,

I am new to Premiere Pro, but not to NLE applications. I am making the switch from Vegas. I am currently having some problems with placing transitions, Newbie issue I’m sure. I have a photoslide show that mixes stills and video clips with cross dissolves between them. The problem I am having is when video is mixed with stills. Most of the sequence is made up of stills (Ken Burns style photo montage) with a few video clips placed in the timeline. For example:

I have a 5 sec still that dissolves in to a 8 sec video clip, then back to a 5 sec still. (These are elements all on one video track)

I have no problem placing a transition “between” the first still and video clip, but when it comes to adding a transition “between” the end of the video clip and beginning of the 2nd still, it won’t let me place the transition between the clips, it’s either at the end of the video clip, or beginning of the second still. So I’m not getting the A to B dissolve like I can get transitioning from the first still in to the beginning of the video clip.

I believe it must be a newbie issue when it comes to Premiere and transitions, but thanks for your help.

If you are trying to add cross dissolves between a still and a video:

Place your 2 clips side by side, then put your CTI (current time indicator cursor) on or very near the cut between the two clips (you can hold the shift key while dragging to make the CTI snap to that cut), make sure that the track is selected by clicking on the name of the track next to the “eye”, then just hit Ctr+D, that’s the shortcut for the default transition which is a cross dissolve.

    Thanks for the reply.

I just don’t understand why it would allow me to create a transiton that overlaped the two clips when going from Still to Video, but not when going from Video to Still.

I will try again once I get home checking the CTI, but I was simply trying a drag and drop from the transitions panel, and it would visually indicate placing the transition at the end of the video clip, or the begining of the still, but not “between” and overlapping the two clips.

    I hope that makes sense.

What’s probably going on is that you don’t have any video “hidden behind” the transition to use during the dissolve. If the segment that’s in the timeline goes right up to the last frame of video, then when you try to place a dissolve, it’s not going to be able to do a dissolve that “starts at transition”. It could only do a dissolve that “ends at transition” (assuming you have some room at the beginning of your still frame). So you may want to trim back the video 15 or 20 frames, then drop your dissolve transition on it.

    Hope this helps. Have fun!

Thanks for the reply and Good point, but not the case here. :O(

There is definately footage before and after the clip. But to make sure I’m not misunderstanding, I did this:

    Opened the source video
Set IN and OUT points, (plenty of footage before and after)
and inserted the video between two stills on the timeline.

Just can’t transition from the end of the video clip into the next still. This happens in every video clip I place on the timeline. I can transition from still into video, but not from video into still.

It only allows me to place the transitions at the end of the video clip, so it would transition to black, or the beginning of still, transition from black. Not A to B.

One you have the transition applied, select it in the timeline and open the Effects Controls window…set the alignment as “Center at Cut”.

    Josh-

Did you check the head of the still – it too should not be at the begining of the clip (even though, theoretically a still has no set duration) – try moving the inpoint into the still as well – that should take care of it.

    Hi SJ…

I wrote about this previously on this forum:

    Marisu,

That was it kindof or got me pointed in the right direction, I had to overlap the two segments slightly. Overlaping is what allowed the transition to be placed “center at cut”. It’s flakey to me, because everywhere else I can place transitions “center at cut” without overlaping the two clips. I can’t see a clear defined rule/logic.

    1. I don’t have to do this when going from photo to photo.
    2. I don’t have to do this if the transition A is a photo and B is video.
    3. I only have to do this when transition A is video and B is photo.

But enough said, I’ve got it working! :O)

Thank you all for your help.
