    Hi,

I’m editing a pretty simple split screen project in Premier Pro CC. My original footage is from a Canon 5d Mark III shot at 1920 x 1080, 29.97 fps. Mostly I want to go in and out of having two shots on screen. No fancy movement, tho sometime I need to zoom into one of the shots, or recenter it.

When I last did split screen, I was still using Final Cut 7, and used a plugin from Digital Heaven that made it pretty easy, call DH_Box.

Thinking I could get something similar, I’ve downloaded and paid for Hawaiki Split which is part of FXFactory. But man, the render times are BRUTAL!!! 5-7 minutes for just two clips on the screen, EVERY TIME I make even the smallest change.

I’ve been going thru recommendations, making sure the sequence settings match the original footage. Tried to double check the memory settings, etc. I transcoded to ProRes 422 and tried to edit in that. It’s still just miserable.

I’m not a codec or Premiere settings genius, so maybe I’m making a mistake. If anyone has any pointers on how to make this workable, I’d appreciate it.

I can also edit in Apple Motion 5, if that will hurt less.

    thanks!

Unfortunately Jana, this is related to the plugin itself as far as I can determine. In fairness, some of the moves and animations are relatively complex so I can understand how it would take a while to render out. However, are you able to preview the effect without preview rendering? That is always the goal of Premiere Pro. If you’re coming from FCP and you think that anything red in the timeline must be previewed rendered, then you should look for some tutorials that cover your preview options like full/half/quarter, etc.

Assuming that you are doing these things correctly, then the issue still lies with either your system resources or the plugin itself. We have made our GPU hardware acceleration available to 3rd party plugins, but not all have embraced it as of yet. You should reach out to FX Factory and inquire.

    HTH,
