Just wondering if anyone knows a way to batch rename .MXF files off a P2 card. I have a ton of car b-roll from an automotive dealership that I will be accessing for different projects from time to time, and it would be nice if I could use Windows Explorer to look for specific products (ie Dodge Ram, Jeep Wrangler, etc), without having to drag in hundreds of files with file names like “0045EV.”

I’m new to P2 cards, my old company is still shooting to DVCPro50 and logging and capturing. I love skipping that step, but my workflow would be much faster with the files renamed.

I’ve searched Adobe on-line, and Google, but haven’t found a possible answer. I’m using P2 Ingester currently to pull media from the card. Maybe there is a better software?

Also, does anyone know if Adobe Bridge has plans for an update that will preview .MXF files? If so, that would be HUGE!!!

    Thanks for your feedback.

Do you absolutely need the files renamed? I ask because once in PPro’s media bin, you can “rename” them with aliases. You can give your clips descriptive names that don’t interfere with the atomized file structure of P2 footage.

HAVE TO … no. It would just make life easier. One idea I did have was to rename them in the media bin within PPro (just like you suggest), save a default project, then open that project each time and re-save it project specific. Little extra work but might be the easiest work-around.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

You could also select them all and create shortcuts, those could be renamed.

One thing I’ve noticed is that my .MXF files aren’t always in the same order that I shot them. I shoot on a Panasonic AG-HVX200 and the letters of the file naming at the beginning of the clip are often not in any type of order at all. Is there a way to program what you want the files to be named as in the camera? Has anyone else had this problem?

For real?! Are you telling me there’s no way to rename P2 MXFs in Premiere without going in and renaming all the individual audio/video source files??? That’s ridiculous! I think the whole Media Browser metadata thing is cool and all, but why the heck is there no way to bake the metadata in?

For example, in FCP 7, I can rename a clip in the browser and choose to rename the original source file. Heck, I can even delete the clip form my project and choose to delete it from the hard drive!

Also in FCP 7, There’s a log and transfer window that allows me to selectively rename and selectively capture only the shots I want. Granted, FCP transcodes, but the workflow is impeccable!!

In premiere, it ought not be too much of a stretch to ask for a utility that will allow the user to preview their P2 card, selectively name, and selectively copy to the hard drive. I’m not saying transcode, I’m not saying destroy the folder structure, but let me select what I want to copy and what to name the files.

Is there any way to do anything remotely close to that? Even if it’s a 3rd party software/plugin?
