I am confused about the version numbering of Premiere Pro. The version I have calls itself version 7 – it was bundled with my Matrox video capture card.
Thinking about upgrading, I looked on the Adobe website and saw that an upgrade to Premiere Pro 1.5 is available for versions 6.5 and earlier; no mention of 7. Is Version 7 in fact a variant of Version 1 and thus an earlier version than 6.5? More to the point, can I upgrade using the 1.5 upgrade available on the Adobe website or do I have to go for the full version?

The short answer is that Premiere Pro (1.0 or 1.5) is the newest version of Premiere. What you’re seeing as “7.0” is actually Premiere Pro 1.0, which is newer than 6.5, and Premiere Pro 1.5 is even newer. For more than you ever wanted to know about the topic, keep reading.

After Premiere 6.5, Adobe decided to build the next version from scratch. They re-wrote a lot of the code from the ground up. With this “rebirth” of Premiere, they christened it “Premiere Pro”. With it, they also changed the numbering scheme they had been using. The history of the versions looks something like this:

Premiere 5.x, 4.x, all earlier versions
    Premiere 6.0
    Premiere 6.5
    Premiere Pro 1.0
    Premiere Pro 1.5

Now, since Premiere Pro was the seventh version of Premiere, there were still some references to Premiere Pro (1.0) as version 7.0. That’s confused a lot of people.

Thanks for that info. It looks, from what you say, as if the upgrade that Adobe are selling, for 6.5 and earlier to 1.5, is not appropriate for Premiere Pro 7. So how do I upgrade – or shouldn’t I need to?

You can upgrade, Malcolm. Remember that “7.0” is actually “Pro 1.0” (there’s no such thing as “Pro 7.0”), so going up to 1.5 is a no-brainer.
